Walter Hartridge has been a member in the Firm since 1961 and has a broad-ranging litigation practice which includes complex commercial litigation, class action suits, defense of personal injury claims, prosecution of serious personal injury claims, medical malpractice, products liability, construction litigation, securities litigation and maritime litigation. Examples of Mr. Hartridge's extensive litigation experience include serving as lead trial counsel in a number of major adversary proceedings in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Georgia, serving as co-lead counsel in a major class action brought against the directors of a company for breach of fiduciary duty, and successfully defending or concluding several class action suits. He has handled a number of major limitation actions and has represented various maritime interests in asserting maritime liens against vessels. Courts in which he is admitted to practice include the Federal District Courts for the Northern, Middle and Southern Districts of Georgia, State and Superior Courts of Georgia, the Georgia Court of Appeals, the Georgia Supreme Court, and the 11th circuit Court of Appeals. In addition, he has practiced in the Federal Courts in Miami, Tampa, New Orleans, South Carolina and the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.
Mr. Hartridge is a member of the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Georgia. He served two terms as a member of the Judicial Qualifications Commission of Georgia and is included in the publication The Best Lawyers In America, Naifeh and Smith, in the categories of Business Litigation and Maritime Law. He is a past member and Vice-Chairperson of the State Disciplinary Board Review Panel of the State Bar of Georgia and a past Trustee of the Institute for Continuing Legal Education in Georgia. Mr. Hartridge is a member and past Chairman of the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute and is a member of the Maritime Law Association of the United States. He is also a member of the Georgia Defense Lawyers Association and a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He has been recognized as a Super Lawyer in Georgia since 2005. He is also designated as a top attorney in business litigation in the Corporate Counsel Edition of Super Lawyers.
After receiving his B.A. with Distinction from the University of Virginia, Mr. Hartridge did postgraduate work at the University of Munich in 1957-1958 and received an LL.B. from Harvard Law School in 1961. While at the University of Virginia, Mr. Hartridge was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and the Raven Society and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He served as an Artillery Officer in the United States Army, both on active duty in Germany and in the National Guard, attaining the rank of Captain. Mr. Hartridge is fluent in French, having served as Honorary Consul of France in Savannah, and has a working knowledge of German.
Active involvement in the Savannah community is very much a part of Mr. Hartridge's life. He has served as President and Chairman of the Board of the Historic Savannah Foundation, Vice Chairman of the Savannah-Chatham Historic Sites and Monuments Commission, and Chairman of the Revolutionary Battlepark Committee appointed by the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Savannah. Further, he has served as a Trustee of the Georgia Conservancy and as President of the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Georgia.
